This case documents a pair of maxillary central incisors produced in ICERA 4D Pro and photographed at high magnification against a black field. The black background is deliberate. It removes reflected fill light and forces the material to display its own optical behaviour rather than borrowing brightness from the surroundings — which is why it is unflattering, and why it is the right way to photograph anterior work.
Central incisors are the least forgiving restorations in dentistry. They sit at the front of the smile, they are symmetrical by nature so any mismatch between the pair reads immediately, and they are surrounded on all sides by the patient's own enamel for comparison. There is nowhere to hide a material that does not behave optically like a tooth.
The translucency gradient
The single most important feature in these images is the vertical transition from cervical to incisal. At the cervical third the material is warm, dense and chromatic — an ivory-cream that carries body and stops light passing through. Moving incisally, chroma drops and the material progressively opens up until, at the incisal third, it becomes genuinely translucent with a cool blue-grey cast.
The cool blue-grey cast is not simply a surface stain. It is the result of light transmission, scattering and opalescent behaviour within the ceramic. Against a dark field, those optical effects become much easier to see. Surface staining can imitate colour, but it cannot fully reproduce the depth created by light travelling through a genuinely translucent material.

Structura mamelona et particulae incisales

Reproducing this is a judgement call rather than a default. Mamelon visibility generally decreases with age and functional wear, but the amount that should be reproduced depends on the individual dentition. Building the structure into a restoration for the wrong patient produces a tooth that is technically beautiful and obviously artificial in the mouth. Here the mamelons are present but restrained — visible under magnification, subtle at conversational distance, which is the correct calibration for most adult anterior cases.
The amber tinting between the lobes performs a specific job. Natural teeth are not uniformly cool at the incisal edge; there is warmth trapped in the interlobal spaces where dentine sits closer to the surface. Without it, the incisal third reads as flatly grey and slightly dead.
Surface texture and gloss
